playing well with others....

the democrats now own the house and the senate. and while this is what i had hoped for, i would be lying if i didn't say it makes me nervous as all get out.

i run a shelter that the city loathes. it paints a target on my back for all the negative stuff that happens in the city. they look at me and go.........see?

that's what the democrats have now. the potential for doing great good. and a big old target on their backs.

i have done a lot of work with the existing powers in the city to try to compromise and show my understanding of their needs and issues. but there comes a point when what is right is just what is right. and that's the same point that makes the city go nuts. they want names, social security numbers of all my guests, every night.

i said no. they will try to hold up my lease until i capitulate. the merger will help me build a power base to fight this. but in the end, the city is where my guests are and i will have to pay attention to both. if i don't, the guests will suffer.

the democrats have a humanistic agenda. and a whole lot of righteous anger. it is tempting to take this new found position of power and kick some ass. but then who wins? the citizenry? nope. the president? nope. who wins? and what do they win and at what cost do they win it?

power is difficult to wield gracefully. it is my hope that the democrats have learned some important lessons in the last 6 years. and instead of shooting themselves int eh foot, that they will take the high road and think of the greater impact a truly bi partisan government could yield.

yes, we have the power now to stop the bleeding in this country. let's do it with dignity and respect.

in the end, if they don't, the next election may prove to be a less heady experience for them.

and then we all lose.

You cannot conceive the many without the one.

Can ANYONE tell me what a Democrat or a Republican stands for?? Senator Chafee (Republican) if anyone remembers voted against the War and was recently outed because he was a Republican. He has as a matter of fact probably personified the term RINO better than any member of Congress. What if the new Senator turns out to be a more conservative Dem than Chafee was a Liberal Repub? Do you think the majority of people that voted had a Clue as to what there candidate stood for? Change for the better is good, but my fear is most people voted for Change for the sake of Change.

Lastly a comment about your" they want names, social security numbers of all my guests, every night. Is your fear that this will keep people away because they are or have done something illegal?or possibly, The Increased paperwork involved in doing this with, I am sure, a very limited staff? If it is the first question and the dems get their way concerning immigration, pretty much opening the border, how will this help alleviate pressure on your services?

Much Rather talk about SEX btw Liberal Amounts of it

they want the names and ss#'s so they can run them against outstanding warrants and harrass the homeless. i have a medical clinic in the shelter. i could scream hipaa. i ahve women and men who are survivors of domestic violence and i'm legally bound NOT to disclose those names.

how can i disclose the others then? the ACLU woudl jump on me in a second.

but more importantly........if someone comes to my shelter and needs help....how can i threaten them with police and gain their trust? how can i help them move forward if they won't come in because they are afraid that the police will arrest them?

i'm a good neighbor to this City and i work hard and long to esnure that my shelter is not a "hideout" for criminals. but this? this across the board identificaiton? it smacks of a police state and a level of control that makes me bitterly angry.

The whole world is now watching the Dems. Any mistake will be amplified, and mis-step will be held up to public ridicule.

The majority of the citizenry just wants good government, regardless of which party is in power. Historically the best governance has come when the power is split ... we can only hope this is the case now.

As for wanting the names and SSNs of your guests, if you are taking city funds you probably need to give them up ... if the city is not funding you, they can go to hell.

wickedeasy replies on 11/11/2006 6:04 am:
teh city is not funding me. they do however hold the lease to the building where my adult shelter is sited.

From across the pond it is a step in the right direction. Most significant changes are rarely leaps, but series of steps, an inching process, while the mischief makers try to trip-up all along the way.

Good luck America.

Playing well with others is always the challenge, isn't it? I can understand your frustrations with running the shelter, and the invasiveness of governmental agencies..I spent 12 years working with low income folks, a large part of that during the Reagan administration. Hopefully, the shift in power will bring real change, but I'm afraid that Dubya will simply drag out his VETO stamp, and use it over and over..after so many years of his smug, vitriolic, and contentious attitude, I don't buy into his newly-hatched Mr. Cooperation..I just wonder how long he will wear the smiling mask..

wickedeasy replies on 11/12/2006 7:59 am:
nods

i'd like to rip the mask off
and i doubt it will be long.........he's not going to go gently into that good night is he?

the man seriously creeps me out - shudders

i wish you and your guests the best against the powers-that-be. .. you're doing the work of the angels, and we need more people like you: caring, understanding, and actually doing something to help! it makes me embarrassed that i talk the talk, but don't often walk the walk - you've given me a wake-up call, the kick in the ass i need to get out there and help
thank you!

Great post. Let's hope it works. I think the Dems have wanted to be bipartisan all along. It's the other side that wouldn't do anything unless it was a slamdunk for their side. We'll see if the GOP capitulates. Maybe there are some good and decent ones, like Chaffee, who looks at what the people want, and believes he is doing the right thing, even though he's on the out.

wickedeasy replies on 11/12/2006 8:02 am:

If you pay the full rent for the building, tell them to bugger off!

wickedeasy replies on 11/12/2006 8:02 am:
and what?
lose my lease?
get my rent raised until it is untenable to stay there?

"and doing a lot of lobbying......shhh, i'm not supposed to"

Hope you're also pulling down the huge lobbyist's salary, too!
