The Time of Your Life

I am a huge Green Day fan, and in my middle age I have braved the mosh pit just to be front and center at their concerts. I think their entire body of work is amazing and I naturally connected to their signature ballad Good Riddance – Time of Your Life.

"Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test, and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time”

“So take the photographs, and still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time
Tattoos of memories and dead skin on trial
For what it's worth it was worth all the while”

“It's something unpredictable, but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.”

There is a certain irony that a song about a breakup has become an anthem of positive reminiscence and reflection. Even the songwriter has admitted that “I hope you had the time of your life” was penned as bitter sarcasm but he has later embraced it as a positive bid farewell.

When I was navigating a challenging career change several years ago, the message “so make the best of this test and don’t ask why” told me that even bad things happen for a reason and I needed to accept that the lessons learned would serve me later in life and they have.

And when special things in my life have ended when I didn’t really want them to I accepted that as well and have chosen to cherish the “photographs and still frames in my mind”.

I suppose a journey without turning points has less risk but many times the real beauty and rewards in life lie in the fringes. If bad things happen, make them a good riddance, learn from them but keep moving. And if you lose something you truly value, don’t be sad because it’s over, be happy because it happened. Something doesn’t have to be forever to be the time of your life.

Life's a journey not a destination

You write beautifully--I think people and events which come into our lives are like messages. I have the belief that we call out to those messages without even knowing it. It's our way of helping ourselves and those with the message being helped by your message. Does that make sense?

I agree its important to keep moving in a positive and forward direction. Many of us in our forties and fifties are going through the throws of divorce or other life changes. This is about the time we question as to what we have contributed in this life, if our relationships are fulfilling and the roles we played as parents are suddenly shifting.

I do think that realizing not all happy, inspired moments are supposed to last forever is important. Neither are all seemingly positive uplifting relationships.

But there is also the jolting realization that a life less lived should not last forever either. That a half life of conforming to others expectations and impossible standards takes little pieces out of a person--pieces that they can't afford to lose. It flies in the face of the human will to preserve integrity.

You are a talented writer.

That sentiment has been told a million time over, but rarely so succinctly put. Quite the way I see my life in reflection.
