The Map
You visualize something left on my skin:
Ghostly footprints of knots, claiming by
rope, through modeling of cells and space.
I begin to consider the implications…
mappa mundi- these flesh echoes, like
Pre-Columbians drew in tiny footprints
to represent their jungle pathways-
There’s a kind of poetic precision in that.
Incas built relief maps of stone and clay.
Mariners torque their sextons, measuring
Altitudes of celestial objects- they call this
sighting the object. With equal reverence,
Like inking the scallops of boiling waves,
I could transform that crow's feather into
An unambiguous, yet fragile, quill pen
and you could draw trembling, a
Cartography of steppes, tundra feet,
Towers and bridges and stone walls upon
Curvilinear rivers, arching mountains,
Dense groves, barren desert plateaus …
Oh, yes, we’ll mark my very person –
A heaving topography of this place of
Joining “us” that we’ve compass spun,
We’re it visiting together. And we’ll
Simply record our memories in these
Contour lines of come, blooming past
Trails of sweat craving my canyons,
A cut eroding the banks of my rivers-
Craters, incisor-born, distinctly red-
Lush bruises spreading from the mouth
Of my rivers, and yes, you’ll draw
My holy Jerusalem centre, your quill
will trance my Europe to the West, as
Africa sitting, grave silent, central
And Asia will reach backwards, gently
Tracing my fully explored circumference
Damp delta basin - resembling Borneo mist
Your eager Tropic of Capricorn tongue
Orienteering, traipsing, meandering idyllic
At last! Amongst so many tempting landmarks

Dear Mr. Templar,

Funny. You like it, he likes it. I'm ok with it. I feel it needs a little more umph. More of the layers of maps and cartography. Some research and subtle references only a professional might get, that will 'sing,' in this context. I woke up in the wee hours pondering. Silly MT
