Worshipping the Bull: Part 1

Knossos, Crete: The Leaper (1,500 BC)

Angular cranes and gaudy goldfinches
Erupt out of the burning South sky
Into the dim-day Cypress green below -
Oleander and osier bloom in the ravines.
They say Titus banished our poisonous snakes
So how is it, a dotted serpent curls yellowing
Round and round my Mothers palm?
Well ring our alters, glorious with poppies,
Griffon vultures shall ingest scurrying lizards,
As I worship, bare-footed and bare-breasted

On the Day of the Dance, all vendors
And their disputes will settle, uneasy,
All things abominable will wait, only
Burnished flies will hover - eagerly -
Over market stalls, laden with their wares
In all the giddy world, nobody loves,
Till our leaping dance begins, by the blood
He led, springtime, bravery through linear sinews
But I followed, and I gave him my taramas
Till he is tasting a mermaids thighs,
Light arch move, hands touch here or there

This will be my moment, teeth flash out
I excel at these falling-star escapades
The audience inhales collectively, taunt
I open my hips up, tense, to take him on,
I shiver, my skin betrays, the sun bakes,
Precious nostrils flare, woven rushes adorn
His warrior flanks and he walks like war -
Seeing him, I feel my chest quick and high,
His feet pounding the soil to move with me
Too late, I find he has undone me, and I drop

My breath stopped up like a pig bladder flask,
Expelling rough grit Horns of Consecration -
He has taken me to the sand and parted my
Flesh, ripped into me with his hardness till
I, exhale dying, offering my finest worship,
Packed in a cured bulls hide (oh the irony) -
To be potted in a clay pot, like some anemones,
My devoted mother and my father, seeing this
Retreated to the Cave of Eileithyia to pray,
Never the more seen by any but numerous bats.

IMAGE: famous fresco of Minoan Taurokathapsia found in the East wing of Knossos Palace, dated around 15th century B.C. The different phases of the sport are shown. The bull leapers are both men and women. Women are white and men are red, as depicted in traditional Minoan artworks.
----
Bull-leaping (also known as Taurokathapsia) is a motif of Middle Bronze Age figurative art, notably of Minoan Crete, but also found in Hittite Anatolia, the Levant, Bactria and the Indus Valley. It is often interpreted as a depiction of a ritual performed in connection with bull worship. This ritual consists of an acrobatic leap over a bull; when the leaper grasps the bull's horns, the bull will violently jerk his head upwards giving the leaper the momentum necessary to perform somersaults and other acrobatic tricks or stunts.
-----
Taramas is carp roe crme, also known as taramosalata. It tastes remarkably like a pussy. The roe is mixed with either bread crumbs or mashed potato, and lemon juice, vinegar and olive oil. The color can vary from creamy beige to pink, depending on the type of roe used. Thus, it often is vaguely pussy-colored as well as tasting like pussy.
-----
"Horns of Consecration" are found throughout Bronze Age Cretan sites, and can occur both as three-dimensional objects of stone or terracotta, often stuccoed, and as painted or sculpted representations on murals, altars, vases, seals, and larnakes. Typically they serve either as stands for a narrow range of other cult implements or as architectural crowning members on both altars and roofs. The original significance of the "horns" is uncertain. It has been suggested that they are stylized bulls' horns, a symbol of the moon's crescent.
----
Caves appear to have first been used as cult places early in the Middle Minoan (Protopalatial) period, at more or less the same time when the first Cretan palaces were being constructed. There may very well be some connection between the establishment of powerful central authorities in the palaces and the institution of worship in caves. The evidence for the use of caves as cult places consists of pottery, animal figurines, and occasionally bronze objects. Such objects are found not only in caves which had previously served habitation or funerary purposes but also in caves which had as their earliest known function the housing of some religious activity. In addition to artifacts, some cult caves contain large quantities of animal bones, mostly from deer, oxen, and goats and no doubt derived from some form of animal sacrifice.

One of the better known cult caves is the "Cave Of Eileithyia" near Amnisos, associated with the divinity Eileithyia on the basis of a reference in Homer's Odyssey. This cave is some 60 m. long, between 9 and 12 m. wide, and 2 to 3 m. high. Near the middle of the cave is a cylindrical stalagmite ca. 1.40 m. high which is enclosed by a roughly built wall 0.45 m. high. Within the enclosure and in front of the stalagmite is a roughly square stone, perhaps some form of altar.
-----
Two famous faience Snake Goddesses from Knossos belong to the New-Palace period (about 1600 BCE). Besides the ritual function, they are among the best examples of the Minoan art with its dominant features - naturalism and grace. They are presented as the ladies of the palace court, dressed in the typical Minoan clothes with a long skirt (flounced, or with an apron) and a tight open bodice. The snakes crawl around the body of one the goddesses and appear in each hand of the other. These statuettes are interpreted sometimes as the goddess and her votary, the mother goddess and her , or the human attendants of goddess, as well as the women personified the goddess.

Figures of the Snake Goddess and some other cult objects - so called snake tubes and vessels with holes, decorated by a model of snake - illustrate the worshipping of a Snake Goddess and her cult in Crete during some periods. It seems that this cult came to existence from very early Minoan age, derived from the Egyptian belief system, but there was a strong Near-Eastern influence too. In the Egyptian mythology the snake was a personification of the goddess Kebechet, symbolized the purification by water in the funeral cult, so the snake became a protector of the pharaohs in their death. In the Sumerian and the Old-Babylonian literary tradition the snake was a wise creature and an expert for miraculous herbs of the eternal youth and immortality. A similar idea is contained in the Cretan myth about Glaukos, where the snake knows the herb of rebirth and resurrection.

i see this: the relationship of two alphas, one must lead, the other must give way.

I am notoriously unable to sense sarcasm's presence, so I'm not sure what that means. Though, in retrospect, I suppose it IS naive of me to think you hadn't considered a book from your work.

I think all I meant to convey is that it's at (above, actually) publishable skill level, in my opinion and reading. And I think it'd do well in the "smart and sexy" genre, which actually I think is very slim pickin' as is. Definitely not the same level of your stock romance novel. Now there's an idea. Ever consider writing something of more length, either novel(la) or epic poem? I'm thinking something like Saul William's "S/he", which if you haven't read or heard him speak, I recommend in the highest.
OK that is more like it. The other comment I was like "this man is bright, how can he think I wouldn't have already considered that?"

I have read S/he. It is excellent. I remember when it first came out, reading reviews, comments, and a general buzz.

You are right about the genre of erotica- there is a space on the shelf (if you will) I could and would like to help fill, the 'smart and sexy' shelf. And I have tried writing some short stories (as you see here) to help myself branch out a bit and feel comfortable with whatever mode of literature a publisher may ask for. One must tread lightly on Hookup.Date Naughty Affair Dating referring to anything that implies or states outright that one's Hookup.Date Naughty Affair Dating-viewable material might be jumping ship. Or one might be banned. What a shame if they misunderstood me. Right? Got it?

That would be very valuable to me, and I very much look forward to your thoughts or suggestions.

In fact, I'll say of anyone, I would *most* value your input here (as a woman, a lover of an Alpha, and a person from Cyprus which is very near Crete and of a similar or the same landscape/flora/fauna.) Did I get it right - (Crete) I mean?

I would expect you to see that embedded in this poem is the notion that she is also having sex out there, and that perhaps it is a woman being given to a human man the people are watching. Could it be that - as with the Pagan Celts and their belief in the Horned One as presented by a man wearing antlers being given a female woman as an offering during Rites of Spring - the Cretan religious motif of a sacred bull was embodied in the presentation of a very aggressive, virile man who ritualistically ravaged a woman, during a similar Rite of Spring in ancient Greece?

Am I just too vulgar and warped to image a group of spectators watching what begins as a seduction and ends in a death?

(MT can be a sick fuck, it is true)

Maybe there were two kinds of rituals- a metaphoric bull-dance, and an actual bull leaping/dancing event? That is what I am implying, right? Anyway, I give away my thoughts too too much here. Let's hear what you have to say.

(It's probably just as likely they really just jumped over actual bulls, and the rest of that is my over-sexed imagination and latent desires taking off, from more well-established history.)

This poem isn't even about bullfighting, Dicey.

It's about people dancing/leaping over bulls, grabbing their horns and so on...and about a woman who dances like this and is killed.

Silly Dicey!
