The "NoFap" online movement

I just finished reading an article in Macleans magazine about a group of young people (mostly men) who are refraining from watching porn and have stopped masturbating. They claim that it has improved their lives by elevating their self-esteem and career focus and has also changed how they view women. They feel that porn has created an unrealistic attitude about sex and that normal people can never meet that standard.
I'm 100% behind anything that will improve the respect that people have for themselves and for others and make people feel more in control of their lives. That can only be a good thing. I confess I don't watch much porn but I find it hard to believe that it can be much different from what my friends and I are doing in a group situation, though the bodies may be more conventionally attractive. I have two questions:
Is porn really all that unrealistic? And with the right people, aren't we all porn stars?

I watch porn semi-regularly and I find it to be highly unrealistic . But I mean that's the point right ? Most people would rather watch Rocky than a real boxing match because reality rarely does well in the fantasy v reality showdown . The problem is when people start to confuse the two . You don't want treat your lady like a porn slut (unless that's what she's into) just like you don't drive your car like the Fast and the Furious because the real world doesn't work like that .

Is it unrealistic because of the acts performed or the way people interact or how they look?

All of the above

We are all porn stars in our own minds, and thats where fantasy (the unreal) begins. When realized, it is seldom what we imagined. (but with a good camera, director, and editing suite......yes, we can all be porn stars)

Actors always look like actors, always play roles, always perform their part (many times to get it just right). The interactions and acts are strictly as planned. You don't often have a plan (or get a re-take) in real life, and not all people look or make good actors/role-players.

Romanticism is seldom a suitable substitute for reality, which inevitably has its way.

We watch quite a bit of porn but prefer the amateur stuff, and it is very realistic. The professional stuff is totally plastic and really not enjoyable. The great thing is that the porn we like is very much like our own home movies!

I'm interested to learn that, Prairiedogs. Back in the day, before the internet I sometimes looked at print porn (and enjoyed it)but videos weren't as accessible and with children around most of the time, not all that practical. I think I was also put off by a particular video of a man penetrating a woman with a hair dryer. I have read recently that there is a new genre of porn that is directed at women. Have you checked out any of that?
