The Impossible DREAM?
The Impossible DREAM? Legislation that would let thousands of undocumented high school students attend college or join the military now has a good chance of passing in a Democrat controlled Congress. A bill known as DREAM (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors) will be re-introduced by Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL ) early next year. In a nutshell, this bill would allow immigrants that came to the United States illegally prior to the age of 16 to obtain a conditional visa to attend college or join the military. The applicant would have to have been in the country 5 years prior to passage of the bill, have graduated high school or obtained a GED, and have no criminal record. This bill was passed in the Senate, but shot down in the House last year by Conservative Representatives that said it amounted to amnesty. Being a fair-minded individual (or so I like to call myself), I can see that a that is brought into the United States by his parents (though living here illegally) is not guilty of anything and should not be punished for what his parents did. This conditional visa would expire in 6 years and if the applicant hadn't served two years in the military or completed 2 years of higher education ... he or she would go back to illegal immigrant status. The Migration Policy Institute in Washington DC estimates that the DREAM Act would make 279,000 people immediately eligible for college or military service. In addition, 715,000 illegal aliens ages 5 through 17 would become eligible in the future. This would really help out the military, which needs to expand. I've found, on the average, someone who immigrated to the US is much more gung-ho and willing to serve than those that were lucky enough to have the birth-right of citizenship. If this act passes this year, I am pretty certain that the President would sign it. It is only fair ... some of these don't even speak their native tongue. Some of these don't even know that they are here illegally ... till they try to go to college or join the military. This is not amnesty ... you have to have done something wrong in order to get amnesty. Once again though this has to be part of a comprehensive immigration reform that is also strong on enforcement (especially of employers). |

Since I'm in higher ed at the moment, that's the POV through which I am looking at this. I'd wager that a very small percentage of that 300,000 would take advantage of the educational component. Meaning, it wouldn't displace anyone. And for the few that did manage to beat odds and do it - THOSE are the kids I want trained to take over from our generation! (did that make sense?) Yeah, I'm still [blog 1hotwahine]

For once, I totally agree with a Republican. I like this Bill. It is well thought and planned. I will be sure to put a word in about it next time I am able to my local elected rep. Ok you have to explain the new blog title to me too.

Nothing wrong with Hollywood movies ... especially when you are watching them on DVD, by a roaring fire, with some hot cocoa, cuddling up to someone special ... what are you doing Friday night? You make that sound awfully appealing, especially if I could spike the cocoa with some Bailey's Irish Cream. Who me? A lush?

pchamp012004 replies on 12/19/2006 7:01 am: Once again you are the first one to spot a title change. It's a take-off on the TV show the Beltway Boys. The Beltway Boys are a political show with one Conservative and one Liberal (they are actually both moderates ... one leaning right and the other left). This Blog makes me think of that show with me leaning right and some of my readers giving a leftist view. They are always polite on the show ... and that's the way I want this Blog to be. Of course my Blog has a mind of its' own and has seriously evolved from its' original purpose ... to pick-up girls. So how are you doing with picking up girls. You certainly have a large group of lovelies following the blog. I like the Beltway Boys. I knew there was a creative reference there. Oh and it isn't the first time I have agreed with a Republican. I have been accused of being one myself. hehehehe

strikes me as appropriate, humane and a good way to help immigrants becoem citizens no down side that i can see but i wonder if Bush will sign it - and if the only reason he will is to shore up military forces You cannot conceive the many without the one.
